back in 2003 we were lead to war on false pretenses. the warmongering media were imprinting upon us the image of saddam hussein as the antichrist, who could destroy western civilisation within 45 minutes.
the year before dutch politician pim fortuyn was murdered. many blamed the media, who campaigned against fortuyn’s rising influence and the word ‘demonizing’ became ubiquitous.
i used to listen to death- and blackmetal a lot as a teenager and i still like the evil-looking logo’s of the bands. i designed logo’s for a couple of german blacmetalbands when i was sixteen and i decided to pick up this craft again.
after all, the manichean black and white imagery of blackmetal seemed fit for the evil bastards that filled the frontpages at the time.
fruitautomaat; installation; extrapool 2003. mixed materials.
slot machines never failed to attract me as a child, however i have rarely played them. standing behind the machine in a crowded bar felt like a very lonely thing to do and I imagined all the visitors were staring at me.
for the destillaat 6 exhibition at >extrapool, nijmegen i put one on top of a stair, which functioned as a stage, to make the experience even lonelier. it also made the machine very intimidating and present. the flickering lights and the computer-like sounds completed the image of an modern day idol, designed to attract.
